CHICAGO, IL — The Chicago Police Department is mourning the death of one of its officers who took her own life, the department and Mayor Lori Lightfoot confirmed Saturday. According to WLS-TV, the female officer was 51-years-old, and the first CPD officer to die by suicide this year.
“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a Chicago Police detective who passed away today from an apparent suicide,” Lightfoot said in a statement on Twitter.
Chicago Police Spokesman Anthony Guglielmi also released a statement on the officer’s recent death.
“We are devastated (SIC) tonight about the passing of an off-duty CPD detective who died of an apparent suicide,” Guglielmi said. “Everyday life can be daunting for anyone — especially police officers who selflessly (SIC) dedicate their lives to safeguarding strangers. Deepest condolences to her family & friends.”
Lightfoot added that we have a moral responsibility as a city to “constantly strengthen the support networks, services, and resources for our first responders, and end any stigma associated with reaching out for help.”
