Coronavirus cases are spiking in Michigan

MICHIGAN — More than 52,000 cases of the coronavirus and over 5,000 deaths have been reported in Michigan as of 10 a.m. Tuesday, according to the most recent data provided by state health officials.

The state reported 435 new cases of the coronavirus Tuesday, bringing the statewide total to 52,350.

An additional 102 deaths related to the virus were also announced Tuesday, bringing Michigan’s death toll to 5,017.

Numbers are sometimes altered as public health officials investigate individual cases. Case numbers sometimes do not match numbers provided by respective counties due to several variables, including testing done by private organizations that report to either the state or the county but not both.

Deaths are reported by health care providers and recorded by local health departments. Other data, such as the number of individuals who have recovered at the state level, are released on Saturdays.

Progress In Michigan’s Coronavirus Battle

A day after the state said it would allow bars and restaurants to reopen in parts of northern Michigan, including the Upper Peninsula and the greater Traverse City area, the state took safety measures to ensure residents still wary of spreading the coronavirus don’t miss out.

On Tuesday, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced all registered voters will receive applications in the mail for absentee ballots.

The move was made with the intention of providing voters with a safe way to cast their vote in the upcoming elections while concerns surrounding the new coronavirus continues.

Benson’s announcement was made despite the state seeing a plateau in coronavirus numbers in recent weeks.

Here is a breakdown of new coronavirus reported in the state over the course of the last 10 days. The state has seen more than 1,000 new cases of the coronavirus reported once since April 29, and health officials said that uptick was the result of a testing backlog.
