PORTLAND, OR – As the 2019-20 school year wound down and turned into summer, Portland Public Schools continues to keep its meal distribution running to help feed our families. For families who are unable to get to the 14 school meal sites, Amazon stepped up.
Amazon, in a partnership with The Fund for PPS, provided deliveries of meals and learning materials to medically fragile students and families with transportation access issues across the city of Portland.
Those meals and materials were available for PPS families to pick up at school sites starting with the closure of campuses in March through the summer. For families unable to get to the sites – such as those with physical mobility issues, special needs, financial hurdles, and compromised immune systems – Amazon’s drivers delivered those items directly to them.
As we transitioned into summer, Amazon wanted to end the school year with a “treasure” for our students. Amazon’s Treasure Truck delivered backpacks filled with school essentials for students, including an Amazon Fire tablet. They also delivered family packages that included household goods, snacks, and other items for the adults in the households.
“We’re so grateful to Amazon for providing a much-needed service to our families,” said Jonathan Garcia, PPS Chief Engagement Officer and President of The Fund for PPS. “They have been great community partners who go well beyond the call to not only provide our families with essentials but to lift their spirits as well.”
Since the onset of COVID-19, Amazon has partnered with food banks and school districts across the country to donate delivery services of groceries and pre-packaged foods to serve 6 million meals using its robust transportation network.
In addition to donating delivery services of more than 5,000 meals and “treasures” to Portland Public Schools families, Amazon’s Treasure Truck has also helped deliver PPE, laptops, high demand grocery items, care packages, and more than 50,000 meals in eight cities across the U.S.
